 Pondycherry is one of the scattered parts of the erstwhile French colony. The other three being Mahe wedged in Kerala coast, Yanam in Andhra Pradesh and Karaikal in Tamil Nadu. Pondycherry retains more of French culture than other two. It is also the Headquarters of the administration of Pondicherry.

 Founded by Sri Aurobindo, a well known philosopher and saint, in 1926, this ashram is one of the most popular with westerners, and its spiritual tenets represent a synthesis of yoga and modern science. The ashram has a flower festooned samadhi (a tomb that is venerated as a shrine) of Sri Aurobindo and 'The Mother', a French devotee to whom the spiritual authority was passed on after the death of Sri Aurobindo. |

 Located just over the border from Pondicherry in Tamil Nadu is the community whose international residents aim to develop a harmonious environment through the implementation of socially useful projects. It is the brainchild of 'The Mother'. Auroville has nearly 80 settlements spread over 20km and about 1200 residents, two-thirds of whom are foreigners. |
